PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE: County mobile WIC clinic will help families access essential services

Allegheny County’s newly launched mobile clinic is an encouraging example of flexible and compassionate healthcare and government services outreach. The clinic, built out from a Ford 350 Transit van, will bring professional nutritionists directly to people participating in the the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC).

The federal program extends critical support including food assistance, breastfeeding guidance and healthcare referrals to vulnerable, low-income pregnant women and those who recently gave birth, along with children up to the age of five. WIC helps over half of all infants born in the U.S., effectively reducing instances of low birth weights, infant mortality, and preventable illnesses like anemia….
